Seismic vulnerability assessment of masonry building supported by STRP isolators

Scrap tire rubber pad (STRP) isolators are made from scrap automobile tires, which expected to be a low-cost material for earthquake-resistant design of low-to-medium-rise buildings in developing countries. This paper describes the seismic vulnerability unbonded STRP (U-STRP) base-isolated masonry building using finite element method. The three-dimensional model U-STRP is placed between foundation and without any bonding them. As result, inertia force transferred through friction. Two alternative versions isolator: strip-shaped square-shaped, analyzed, have comparable geometric stiffness properties. fidelity isolator confirmed numerical analysis experimental results. determined pushover fragility curves then compared that identical fixed-base building. findings show with uniformly distributed square-shaped suffer low damage base shear those same size isolators. has superior performance an building, more effective than isolator.
